Bilbao is a municipality located in northern Spain and a town in the municipality, capital of the province and historical territory of Vizcaya, in the autonomous community of the Basque Country.

The city of Bilbao is the capital and only town in the municipality, and with 346,903 inhabitants in 2024, it is the most populated city in the autonomous community.

The town of Bilbao was founded in 1300 by Diego López de Haro V “El Intruso”, Lord of Bizkaia.

In reality it already existed since the previous century as a populated nucleus on both sides of the Nervión-Ibaizabal, at the point where the river ceased to be an estuary, in the last ford before its mouth into the Cantabrian Sea, which allowed control of the passage of goods. Juan II granted it the category of “City” in 1420, along with the title of “Very Noble and Very Loyal”.
