It has a population of 203,944 inhabitants spread over an area of 25.9 km², according to municipal registry data. Its metropolitan area has 334,830 inhabitants distributed over a surface area of 488.6 km².

Pamplona is located in a climatic transition region between the Mediterranean and Atlantic types. According to the Köppen climate classification, Pamplona’s climate is oceanic type Cfb.

It is also the seat of the metropolitan archdiocese of Pamplona and Tudela, head of the ecclesiastical province that includes the suffragan dioceses of Calahorra and La Calzada-Logroño, Jaca and San Sebastián.

It is the financial and commercial center of Navarre, as well as the administrative center of the community where the regional and state institutions have their headquarters.

Its historical and monumental heritage, as well as various celebrations that take place throughout the year, make it a city that receives national and international tourism. The Sanfermines, of international fame, stand out, filling its streets with thousands of strangers from all over the world. A famous place of the Sanfermines is the Plaza de Toros de Pamplona.

Among its most representative monuments are the cathedral of Santa María, the churches of San Saturnino, San Nicolás and San Lorenzo.

One of the main points of interest in Pamplona is the Citadel of Pamplona The Citadel of Pamplona or New Castle is a Renaissance fortification of ancient military use, built between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in the city of Pamplona.

Historically, it is said that the city was founded in 74 B.C. by the Roman general Pompey as Pompaelo or Pompelo over a pre-existing settlement of supposed Vascon origin, perhaps called Olcairun,8 perhaps Bengoda,9 although no classical historical source records this fact; Strabo does allude, without specifying details, that the foundation of Pamplona was the work of Pompey. From then on, the city would become one of the most important towns in the territory of the Vascones.
During the first half of the 9th century, the local nobility, with the alliance of the Banu Qasi family, managed to consolidate a nucleus of independent power led by Inigo Arista, who turned the civitas of Pamplona into the capital of the Kingdom of Pamplona, a title first used by Sancho Garces I; this same kingdom, in the middle of the 12th century, would be called the Kingdom of Navarra.

The flag of Pamplona is green and has proportions of 2 to 3, with the municipal coat of arms in the center in its colors. It was declared official by the city council in 1930, after being used for the first time in 1923, on the occasion of the fifth centenary of the Privilege of the Union.
