Denia is a municipality and Spanish city of the Valencian Community, located on the north coast of the province of Alicante. It is the capital of the Marina Alta region.
The toponym derives from the Latin Dianium. For much of the twentieth century it was speculated that the term Dianio derived from an Iberian settlement called Diniu, attested by some monetary finds.
It has a population of 45,622 inhabitants, but in summer its population can increase fivefold, reaching 200,000. It is the municipality of Spain with less than 50,000 inhabitants that receives more vacationers according to the seasonal population figures of the Ministry of Finance and Public Administrations.
The Montgó, formerly called Mount Kaón (753 m above sea level) occupies much of the southern half of the municipality and has been declared a natural park since 1987.
Between the Montgó and the sea extends the plain known as Plana de Denia, composed of Quaternary erosion and alluvial materials of great fertility, where agriculture is developed. Another site to visit in Denia is the Cabo de San Antonio is a cape in the town of Xàbia, on the north coast of the province of Alacant, in the Valencian Community, southeastern Spain. It is located north of the town proper, south of Denia, and forms part of the southern edge of the Gulf of Valencia, just before it ends at the more southerly Cap de la Nau.
The municipal market of Denia is definitely a place to go, being the most important market in the city. Or if you prefer something more historical you can visit the Castle of Denia, a picturesque castle on the water built in the eleventh and twelfth centuries with historical exhibits.
The river Girona, which flows down from the Vall de Laguart, crosses the Pla and flows into the sea at the Almadraba, forming a small delta known as La Punta.
